Taking annual leave

When an employee returns from paid parental leave (PPL) and takes annual leave, they will be paid either their average daily pay (ADP) or relevant daily pay (RDP) depending on whether they had any entitled leave as at their PPL start date.

Scenario 1

The employee only has accrued leave as at their PPL start date.

The employee goes on PPL from 05/11/2023 to 05/05/2024. As at their PPL start date (05/11/2023), they had 0 entitled days and 10 accrued days.

Upon returning to work, they took one annual leave day on 13/05/2024. This falls within the pay period 13/05/2024 to 19/05/2024.

Since they only had accrued leave as at their PPL start date, this annual leave day will be paid out at their ADP.

To calculate their ADP, we look at the past 52 weeks of earnings up to the end of the pay period prior to the annual leave being taken. Since the annual leave was taken in the period 13/05/2024 to 19/05/2024, we look at the earnings between 12/05/2023 to 12/05/2024. During this period, the employee’s earnings were $10,000.00.

$10,000.00 / 52 weeks = Average weekly earnings (AWE) of $192.31.

To determine the ADP, the AWE of $192.31 needs to be divided by the employee’s rostered days on, as entered in Team Manager. In this example, the employee’s rostered days on in Team Manager are 5.

Therefore, their ADP is $38.46 ($192.31 / 5), which is the amount they will be paid for the day of annual leave taken on 13/05/2024.

Scenario 2

The employee has both entitled and accrued leave as at their PPL start date. When they take annual leave, they only use entitled leave.

The employee goes on PPL from 05/11/2023 to 05/05/2024. As at their PPL start date (05/11/2023), they had 3 entitled days and 2 accrued days.

Upon returning to work, they took one annual leave day on 13/05/2024, which falls within the pay period 13/05/2024 to 19/05/2024.

Since they had three entitled days as at their PPL start date and are only taking one annual leave day, they will be paid out at their RDP.

Their RDP is calculated by multiplying their daily contracted hours by their hourly rate, both found in Team Manager. In this case, the employee’s daily contracted hours are 8 and their hourly rate is $25. This means their RDP is $200.

Therefore, the employee will be paid $200 for the annual leave day taken on 13/05/2024.

Scenario 3

The employee has both entitled and accrued leave as at their PPL start date. When they take annual leave, they use both entitled and accrued leave.

The employee goes on PPL from 05/11/2023 to 05/05/2024. As at their PPL start date (05/11/2023), they had 1 entitled day and 5 accrued days.

Upon returning to work, they took two annual leave days on 13/05/2024 and 14/05/2024, which fall within the pay period from 13/05/2024 to 19/05/2024.

Since they had one entitled day and five accrued days as at their PPL start date, the first annual leave day will be paid out at their RDP, and the second will be paid out at their ADP.

Calculating RDP: The RDP is calculated by multiplying their daily contracted hours by their hourly rate, both found in Team Manager. In this case, the employee’s daily contracted hours are 8 and their hourly rate is $25. This means their RDP is $200.

Calculating ADP: The ADP is calculated by looking at the past 52 weeks of earnings up to the end of the pay period prior to the annual leave being taken. Since the annual leave was taken in the period 13/05/2024 to 19/05/2024, we look at the earnings between 12/05/2023 to 12/05/2024. During this period, the employee’s earnings were $10,000.00.

$10,000.00 / 52 weeks = Average weekly earnings (AWE) of $192.31

To determine the ADP, the AWE of $192.31 needs to be divided by the employee’s rostered days on, as entered in Team Manager. In this example, the employee’s rostered days on in Team Manager are 5.

Therefore, their ADP is $38.46 ($192.31 / 5).

Payments for Annual Leave Days:

  • 13/05/2024: $200 (RDP)
  • 14/05/2024: $38.46 (ADP)
